You don't have to say the big version.
Telling someone isn't one thing. It comes in sizes, and you get to pick the smallest one that's bearable.
Biggest: “I've been thinking about killing myself.”
Smaller: “I'm not safe on my own tonight.”
Smaller: “I'm having a really bad night. Can you sit with me?”
Smaller: “Can you call me? You don't have to say anything clever.”
Smallest: “Hey.” at 2am, to someone who will notice that's unusual.
And nothing is also a size. Embarrassment is not evidence that you're doing this wrong.
“Nope.” is always allowed here. It's an answer, not a failure.
