You don't have to punish yourself for this.
The shame usually turns up after. It says you were dramatic, attention-seeking, weak, embarrassing, a burden. It replays what you said, what someone saw, what you nearly did.
None of that is a verdict. It's the emotional hangover of a nervous system that spent hours at full volume.
Having a crisis is not a moral failure. It's what happens when pain outruns the resources available at that moment. You didn't choose it, and you don't owe anyone penance for it.
You survived it. That's the entire requirement for tonight.
Things you don't owe anyone right now
- An explanation of what happened.
- An apology for scaring someone.
- A promise that it will never happen again.
- A plan, a lesson learned, or a silver lining.
- Being back to normal by tomorrow morning.
If any of those need to happen, they can happen later, when you've slept.
If someone else saw it
Being witnessed at your worst is its own particular kind of awful. But most people don't file it away as weakness — they file it away as fear for you. You can talk to them about it whenever you're ready, or not at all.
